10 Mistakes First-Time Vietnam Visitors Make (and How to Avoid Them)

A little preparation makes a big difference in Vietnam. These ten mistakes are common—and avoidable.

The ten mistakes

  1. Trying to visit too many cities too quickly.
  2. Failing to check current visa and passport rules.
  3. Booking tight connections on separate tickets.
  4. Ignoring seasonal weather.
  5. Not confirming airport pickup locations.
  6. Traveling without a backup payment method.
  7. Skipping travel and medical insurance checks.
  8. Not carrying offline copies of essential documents.
  9. Assuming every restaurant takes cards.
  10. Eating only familiar international food instead of exploring regional specialties.

A better approach

Build a realistic route, confirm entry requirements from official sources, reserve buffers on travel days and spend more time in fewer places.

Use the official Vietnam electronic-visa portal for e-visa information and confirm requirements for your own passport and journey with the relevant authorities and airline. The Vietnam Consulate General in Sydney identifies this official portal. Avoid treating an old blog post as a current entry decision. For the itinerary itself, our north-to-south route and train-planning guide offer starting points; check actual departures before booking.

Don’t miss the food

Explore markets, family-run noodle shops and regional classics while observing basic food hygiene.
